On 28th March, 1915, while on voyage from Liverpool to West Africa, the Steam Ship Falaba was sunk by a torpedo fired from the German submarine U28, when 38 miles to the west of the Smalls on the Pembrokeshire coast. 104 passengers and crew, including Alan Grieve, lost their lives. The Falaba was the first unarmed passenger ship to be attacked in the war and because their was an American passenger aboard, the incident nearly brought the United States into the war. |
